Obiettivi formativi
Il corso si svolge in Inglese ed è rivolto agli studenti Erasmus incoming. Intende permettere, a chi non ha una conoscenza dell'Italiano tale da seguire corsi letterari, di avvicinarsi all'affascinante mondo della letteratura italiana. Oggetto del corso di quest'anno è la "Commedia" di Dante, il cui interesse è attestato anche dal riuso che ne hanno fatto il cinema, la letteratura, l'arte in tutto il mondo. Scopo del corso è anzitutto di apprezzare i versi di Dante, ma anche quello di conoscere alcuni aspetti della sua cultura (teorie d'amore, modelli poetici, la politica e la ricerca di giustizia, scambi culturali nel Medioevo, papato e monarchia, linguaggio simbolico). Letture e discussioni saranno in Inglese, ma per quei passaggi accessibili agli studenti si userà anche il testo originale. Perciò il corso è anche occasione per la conoscenza di alcuni elementi basilari della lingua italiana.
The course Introduction to Italian Literature in Translation is desined for Erasmus students whch have little or no knowledge of Italian language, and they wish to approach the fascinating world of Italian literary culture and texts. The subjetct this year will be Dante’s Comedy, a masterpiece whose interest is witnessed by the many re-use in contemporary cinema, art, literature all around the world. The aim of the course is above all to enjoy Dante’s powerful poetry, but also to introduce students to some important aspect of his world, such as love theories, poetical models, politics and human struggle for justice, Medieval cultural exchanges, papacy and monarchy, symbolic language. The reading and discussion will be in English, but the original text will also be used more and more in those passages accessible to the students. Therefore some basic elements of Italian language, which appear in Dante’s verses, will also be discussed.

I versi di Dante saranno discussi tenendo conto delle relazioni con altri testi e il loro contesto. Alla fine del corso gli studenti avranno acquisito familiarità con gli aspetti del poema di Dante e il suo mondo che saranno stati disucssi a lezione. La studentessa/lo studente dovrà mostrare una buona conoscenza dei testi e delle letture indicate.
Students will be trained to do a close analysis of Dante’s texts, but also to put his verses in conversation with Medieval culture. At the end of the course the student must be familiar with the aspects of Dante’s poem and of his world considered in the course. She/he must show a good understanding of the texts discussed in class and of the readings requested.

Participation is very important in this class, it will constitute a percentage of the final grade. Students will be assessed by means of a final paper (at least five pages, in English, Italian, French), oral exam, and class participation. Academic integrity is expected of everyone. Please, quote your sources, do not plagiarize.
